Luke Moody, Director of Film Programming at Sheffield Doc/Fest on Diego Maradona

On Thursday, Sheffield Doc/Fest 2019 opens with the latest work from BAFTA and Academy Award winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia. Diego Maradona is a portrait of one of the world’s greatest ever footballers, but it isn’t a film about football, it’s a glimpse of a supernova. As with Kapadia’s previous work, images of uncontrollable passion and raw talent flirt with intoxicated escapism and dangerous downfall. Assembled from omnipresent news coverage and personal archives, the film immerses audiences in a cauldron of volatile glory as Maradona leads Napoli and Argentina to major trophies at the turn of the 90’s. Archival flickers of love, mafia, drugs and cheating weave their way into the aftermath and ultimate expulsion of his genius from the beautiful game. As home of the world’s oldest football club, we can’t wait to host the UK premiere in Sheffield.
